Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Electoral fraud undermines the integrity of democratic processes, casting doubt on the legitimacy of election results and eroding public confidence in political institutions. In Mubi South Local Government, Adamawa State, the persistence of electoral fraud has led to widespread skepticism about the fairness of elections and the effectiveness of democratic governance (Olawale & Bello, 2023). Electoral fraud, including vote buying, ballot box stuffing, and manipulation of results, undermines the credibility of electoral outcomes and reduces citizens’ willingness to participate in the political process (Adeyemo & Musa, 2024). This study explores the impact of electoral fraud on the democratic credibility of Mubi South, examining how these practices affect public trust in elections and the broader democratic system.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Electoral fraud has been a significant challenge in Mubi South Local Government, where allegations of vote manipulation, ballot box snatching, and voter suppression have surfaced during previous elections (Ahmed & Ibrahim, 2023). These fraudulent practices contribute to an atmosphere of distrust, with citizens questioning the fairness and transparency of the electoral process. As a result, the democratic credibility of the local government has been severely compromised, leading to low voter turnout and apathy among the electorate. This study aims to investigate the extent of electoral fraud in Mubi South and assess its impact on the credibility of local elections and the democratic process.
